Hand-Cut Dovetails

PREREQUISITE: Hand Tools classes (Saws, Planes, and Chisels) or equivalent experience

Dovetail joints are the most aesthetically pleasing form of wood joinery; mastering this technique is epically satisfying. With interlocking parts that begin narrow and flare outward, dovetail joints are both elegant and striking. Dovetails can transform a basic box into art and will absolutely distinguish your projects from others.

In this class, you'll learn how to lay out and construct both through and half-blind dovetail joints.

All tools will be provided. However, if you own any of the following tools, please bring them.

• Dovetail saw or Japanese Dozuki

• Marking knife

• Smoothing plane (No. 4 or 4 ½)

• Marking gauge

• Combination square (12")

• Sliding bevel gauge or dovetail gauge (1:8 ratio)

• Bevel edge bench chisel (1/4" or 3/8 ”)

• Chisel hammer or mallet
