The mortise and tenon is a foundational joint in furnituremaking. But what is it? The mortise is an opening in one piece of wood, while the tenon is an insert cut into a second piece. These fit snugly together to form the joint. In this class, you'll learn to cut sturdy mortise and tenon joints by hand using traditional woodworking tools, including hand saws, planes, and chisels. We'll guide you through techniques to lay out and construct both through and stopped mortise and tenon joints.
All tools will be provided for class. However, if you own any of the following tools, please bring them.
Rip filed tenon saw
Crosscut filed carcass saw
1/4" mortise chisel
1/4" and 3/4" bench chisels
