Introduction to Cabinetmaking Part 1

PREREQUISITE: Shop Orientation. If you have not taken this course, sign up for an upcoming session.

Note: This class takes place over two full-day sessions, June 22 and 29.

In this introductory class we will cover the materials, skills, and techniques necessary to tackle many different home cabinetry projects including kitchen cabinets, bath vanities, and built-ins such as media centers and libraries. We will discuss the differences between traditional face-frame style cabinetry and more modern European frameless cabinetry, as well as hardware such as hinges and drawer slides. We will also discuss ways to install and trim out your cabinetry to make it look seamless, as if it grew there.

Success in cabinetmaking depends on accurate measuring, marking, and milling. You will learn how to measure the space for your build correctly, design your cabinet layout, and process materials consistently. You will also learn how to assemble cabinets using both traditional and mechanical joining methods. Finally, you'll learn to build and install doors and drawers to complete your project seamlessly.

The first day will consist of carcass and drawer box construction. The second day will consist of door and drawer face construction, as well as hardware installation.

Class participants will work as a team to construct a set of cabinets for the workshop at Dovetail. You will not have a final product to take home, but you will build the skills and knowledge to create a custom project for a space of your own. Consequently, the normal materials fee has been waived for this course.
